Manchester City Women produced a dramatic comeback at the Etihad Stadium, recovering from behind twice to defeat Arsenal 4-2 and pile further pressure on Gunners manager Renee Slegers.
The victory keeps Manchester City perfect after five Women’s Super League matches and sends them back to the top of the table. Arsenal, meanwhile, are now 10 points behind the defending champions after just five games.
Lauren Hemp was the standout performer for City, scoring twice, while Khadija Shaw completed the comeback late in the second half. Substitute Kerstin Casparij also made an immediate impact by finding the net with her first touch.
Arsenal took the lead when Lisa Baum reacted quickest from close range to turn in Lotte Wubben-Moy’s downward header. City responded through Hemp, who produced a powerful finish from a difficult angle to restore parity.
The visitors started the second half with greater purpose and regained the lead after Yui Hasegawa misplaced a pass inside the penalty area. Alessia Russo took advantage of the mistake and fired a powerful effort beyond Ayaka Yamashita.
City refused to panic. Casparij was introduced from the bench and made an instant difference, curling a superb effort into the top-right corner with her first touch to make it 2-2.
The momentum then shifted decisively toward the hosts.
Hemp completed City’s turnaround when she calmly placed the ball underneath Arsenal goalkeeper Anneke Borbe, putting the home side ahead for the first time.
Shaw then put the result beyond doubt late on, striking from the edge of the box. Her effort took a slight deflection on its way into the net to make it 4-2.
Both sides had further opportunities, but City held on to claim a huge victory while Arsenal were left to consider another damaging result.

Manchester City Analysis: Champions Show Their Character
Manchester City had enjoyed a perfect opening to their WSL title defence, winning each of their first four matches before facing what appeared to be their toughest challenge of the season.
Arsenal’s difficult start to the campaign meant City entered the match as favourites, but the contest developed into a fascinating tactical battle with the momentum repeatedly changing hands.
The hosts controlled much of the opening period and created several promising opportunities. Beth Mead and Shaw both threatened the Arsenal defence, while goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita was also forced into action to push an Emily Fox effort behind.
Hemp and Shaw were relatively quiet during the early stages, but Hemp showed her importance when she responded strongly to Arsenal’s opener. Her equaliser, just three minutes after Baum’s goal, was celebrated with real emotion.
Shaw, however, struggled to influence the game for long periods.
The Jamaican forward missed a major opportunity shortly after half-time when a heavy touch gave Borbe enough time to close the gap during a one-on-one situation.
She was denied again later when Leah Williamson produced an important touch to take the ball away from Shaw following a dangerous delivery from Carlotta Wamser.
Those missed opportunities could have proved costly because Arsenal began to look increasingly dangerous after the interval.
City’s decision to bring on Casparij ultimately changed the match. Her immediate goal restored City’s momentum, while Hemp’s second strike put them in control before Shaw finally found her finishing touch to complete the victory.
The result underlined City’s resilience and showed why they remain one of the leading contenders for another WSL title.
Arsenal Analysis: More Pressure on Renee Slegers
Arsenal arrived in Manchester already seven points behind City and knew that another defeat would leave them facing a significant uphill battle in the WSL title race.
The pressure surrounding Renee Slegers has been growing, particularly after a difficult run of results.
Attention increased further after Slegers missed post-match media duties following Arsenal’s Women’s Champions League draw with Paris FC on Wednesday. She later explained that she had chosen to stay with her players because the squad was emotionally affected by the result.
Against Manchester City, Arsenal showed flashes of the quality that has been missing during their difficult start.
City initially controlled the match, but Arsenal remained organised and eventually broke the deadlock through Baum. The goal was allowed to stand despite replays appearing to indicate that Baum may have been in an offside position when she helped guide Wubben-Moy’s header over the line.
City immediately responded through Hemp.
Arsenal then suffered another setback before half-time when Mariona Caldentey left the field in tears with what appeared to be a hamstring problem.
Despite that setback, Arsenal began the second half brightly. Russo then demonstrated her quality when she found space and fired a superb finish into the far corner to restore Arsenal’s lead.
The goal was particularly significant given Arsenal’s struggles in front of goal. Before travelling to Manchester, the Gunners had scored only twice in their opening WSL matches.
For a brief period, it looked as though Arsenal might leave the Etihad with a hugely important victory.
Instead, losing their advantage twice proved decisive.
City’s response exposed Arsenal’s defensive weaknesses and left Slegers facing even greater scrutiny. With the Gunners now 10 points behind the defending champions after only five matches, their hopes of challenging for the WSL title have suffered a major blow.
Manchester City, meanwhile, remain the only side with a 100% league record and return to the top of the table after another impressive display of character.
