Former Manchester City midfielder David Silva is making a surprise return to football at the age of 40 after coming out of retirement to join Hong Kong Premier League club Sha Tin.
Silva enjoyed an outstanding career with both club and country. With Spain, he lifted the 2010 FIFA World Cup and won two European Championship titles.
His greatest club success came during a remarkable 10-year spell at Manchester City, where he collected four Premier League titles and 11 major honours overall.
The first three of Silva’s Premier League triumphs came during a period in which Manchester City were later found guilty of breaching the league’s financial regulations. The club has appealed those findings.
Silva announced his retirement in 2023 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during pre-season training with Real Sociedad. The serious knee problem brought an end to his playing career at the time.
His contribution to Manchester City’s rise has been recognised with a statue outside the Etihad Stadium, highlighting his lasting status as one of the club’s most influential players.
Now, three years after stepping away from professional football, Silva is preparing for an unexpected new chapter in Hong Kong.
“I’m so excited to go to Hong Kong and enjoy the local culture, the food in Sha Tin and, of course, football in Hong Kong,” Silva said in a video shared on Instagram.
Sha Tin currently sit eighth in the Hong Kong Premier League after four matches. Their next fixture is against Hong Kong Football Club on Sunday, 18 October.

David Silva Preparing for Hong Kong Debut
Silva is not expected to make his competitive debut immediately. Sha Tin said the veteran midfielder will first arrive in Hong Kong, settle into his new surroundings and join the squad for training.
The club will then work with Silva as he builds back toward full match fitness before he makes his first appearance.
His arrival represents a major moment for Sha Tin, with the Hong Kong club adding a player who has won the World Cup, European Championship and Premier League during an exceptional career.
For Silva, the move provides an opportunity to return to the sport he has enjoyed throughout his career while experiencing football and life in a new environment.
At 40, his decision to return to professional football is an unexpected development and adds another fascinating chapter to the career of one of Manchester City’s most celebrated former players.
