Virgil van Dijk signs new Liverpool deal as iconic centre-back debate reignites
Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk has committed his future to Anfield, signing a fresh two-year contract extension, reports Football Scores Today.
The 33-year-old centre-back, a linchpin in the Reds’ backline, looks set to lift his second Premier League title as Arne Slot’s men charge towards the finish line. Van Dijk’s towering late header against West Ham on Sunday pushed Liverpool 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, with just six matches remaining.
It’s not just his leadership or crucial goals that are making headlines. Earlier this season, Van Dijk produced a masterclass in defence against Manchester City’s Erling Haaland during a 2-0 win, prompting Jamie Carragher to take to social media with high praise.
“Van Dijk is the best centre-back we’ve ever seen in the Premier League,” the former Liverpool defender wrote.
“I always said it was John Terry before Van Dijk came along. All great defenders had their kryptonite – attackers who gave them trouble. But who really troubles Van Dijk?
“He just dealt with [Kylian] Mbappe and Haaland like it was nothing — he could’ve played with a cigar in his mouth.
“Let’s stop the debate. It’s not close anymore.”
Signed from Southampton for a then-world record £75 million in 2018, Van Dijk has more than repaid the fee. He played a central role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2019 and helped end the club’s 30-year wait for a league title in 2020.
The Dutch defender has featured in 229 Premier League games for Liverpool, winning 160 of them — a win ratio of nearly 70%. Only a handful of defensive legends — including Tony Adams, John Terry, Nemanja Vidic, and Gary Pallister — boast a higher clean sheet percentage than Van Dijk’s 42.4% (among players with 200+ starts).
Since his debut, no centre-back has won a higher percentage of duels or aerial contests. In fact, among defenders with 3,500+ minutes played since January 2018, Van Dijk has been dribbled past the least — just once every seven games on average (only 35 times total).
He’s also a threat at the other end — since netting a winner on his debut against Everton, Van Dijk has scored more Premier League goals than any other defender (20).
The “greatest Premier League centre-back” conversation continues to divide opinion. On BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, Chris Sutton added perspective:
“Rio Ferdinand was slightly different to Terry. Terry was an incredible defender. Tony Adams was a brilliant leader.
“I understand the Van Dijk shouts. He’s got everything. Some will say Ferdinand because of the trophies. Honestly, it’s hard — can we just call it a three-way tie between Terry, Ferdinand, and Van Dijk?”
Shay Given added his thoughts: “It’s all about opinions, isn’t it? Ferdinand, Terry, Vidic, Woodgate before his Madrid move, Colin Hendry in his prime. Even John Stones deserves a shout. And don’t forget what a player Paul McGrath was.”
Now it’s your turn — how would you rank these 10 iconic Premier League centre-backs?
The debate is open, the stakes are high, and the legends are waiting.
