Arsenal striker Alessia Russo has been named England Women’s Player of the Year after an impressive season for club and country. The 27-year-old has won the fan-voted honour for the second time, having previously received the award two seasons ago.
Russo has played a key role in England’s 2025–26 campaign, appearing in all 10 matches and scoring five goals. She started nine of those games, including all six of England’s qualifying fixtures for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Her latest contribution came last week when she scored England’s third goal in a 3-1 victory over Greece in the first leg of their World Cup play-off semi-final. The return match is scheduled to take place at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium on Tuesday.
The Arsenal forward finished ahead of Chelsea duo Lucy Bronze and Hannah Hampton in the supporters’ vote, underlining her popularity among England fans.
Russo expressed her gratitude after receiving the award, describing the recognition from supporters as particularly meaningful.
“To receive the award is really special, particularly as it comes directly from the fans. I am so grateful for their support,” she said.
She also highlighted the importance of the England squad in helping her achieve individual success.
“A big thank you also to my team-mates – it is always about the collective,” Russo added.
Alessia Russo Earns Ballon d’Or Recognition
Russo’s latest award adds to an impressive list of individual achievements. In September, she was named among the 30 nominees for the women’s Ballon d’Or. England teammate Alex Greenwood was the only other English player included on the shortlist.
Her journey with the national team began at youth level, representing England from under-15s onwards. She earned her first senior international appearance as a substitute against Spain in the final match of the 2020 SheBelieves Cup.
Since making her senior debut, Russo has scored 31 goals in 68 appearances for England. She played an important role in the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 triumph and helped the team retain the European Championship title three years later.
Her consistent performances have established her as one of England’s key attacking options, with her ability to score and contribute to the team’s overall play making her an important member of the squad.
Strong Women’s Super League Campaign for Russo
Russo also enjoyed an excellent domestic season with Arsenal. She finished last season as the highest-scoring English player in the Women’s Super League, recording 13 goals and providing six assists.
One of her standout performances came in May, when she scored twice during Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa. The result helped the Gunners secure qualification for the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Her goalscoring record, contribution to Arsenal and continued influence on the England team have strengthened her reputation as a leading forward in women’s football.
