Lionel Messi has completed the acquisition of Spanish second-tier club CD Eldense, marking his latest investment in Spanish football. The transaction remains subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.
The move represents Messi’s second investment in a Spanish club. The Argentina legend previously acquired Catalan side Cornellà in April, expanding his involvement in football beyond his playing career.
Eldense confirmed the development, describing Messi’s arrival as the beginning of a new chapter for the club, which has a history spanning more than a century.
The Alicante-based team currently competes in Spain’s second division. At the time of the announcement, Eldense sat 19th in the 22-team competition after collecting five points from their first seven matches.
Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, is widely regarded as one of football’s greatest players. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also captained Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title.
Messi had reached a preliminary agreement in September to become the majority shareholder of Eldense, with the acquisition now moving forward. The club said his ownership would support a long-term project focused on its sporting, institutional and social development.
The 39-year-old began his football journey in Argentina before moving to Spain at the age of 13. He made his senior debut for Barcelona in October 2004, aged 17, and subsequently established himself as one of the most successful players in the history of the game.
During his Barcelona career, Messi scored 672 goals in 778 appearances before leaving the club for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. He later moved to Inter Miami in 2023.
His latest investment adds another dimension to his growing involvement in football management and club ownership. Fans looking for more football updates can also follow the latest developments at Football Score Today.
Messi is not the only former football superstar to become involved with a Spanish club. His long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo, now with Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr, previously acquired a 25% stake in Spanish side Almeria.
With Messi now involved with Eldense, attention will turn to how his ownership shapes the club’s future both on and off the pitch.
