Alexander Isak has explained why moving from Newcastle United to Liverpool last summer was an easy decision for him.
The Sweden striker joined Liverpool on transfer deadline day in September 2025 for £125 million, a British-record transfer fee at the time.
Isak said Liverpool’s stature, ambitions and determination to sign him were major factors behind his decision to move to Anfield.
“Liverpool is a massive club, and everything about the club made it pretty clear,” Isak said. He also pointed to the club’s ambition and its strong desire to secure his signature as an important part of the decision.
Isak Never Regretted Leaving Newcastle
Isak’s final period at Newcastle was dominated by uncertainty. He missed pre-season and trained with his former club Real Sociedad while questions remained over his future.
The striker later said that promises made to him during his time at Newcastle had been broken.
His first season at Liverpool was not straightforward either. After finding goals difficult to come by, Isak suffered a leg fracture that kept him out of action from December until April.
Despite those setbacks, the 26-year-old insists he never regretted making the move.
Asked whether he had ever wished he had stayed at Newcastle, Isak was clear in his response.
“No, never. I would never think like that,” he said.
Isak has already matched his previous Premier League tally of three goals this season, reaching that figure after just four league matches.
Reflecting on his lengthy injury absence, the striker acknowledged that the experience was difficult but said he prefers to concentrate on the future rather than dwell on setbacks.
He added that he feels optimistic about the campaign and is excited about what Liverpool can achieve.
World Cup Gave Isak Valuable Playing Time
Isak also experienced a major international milestone over the summer when he made his World Cup debut with Sweden.
The tournament followed a difficult campaign at club level, during which he made 22 appearances and accumulated 1,032 minutes for Liverpool.
He scored once and provided three assists before Sweden’s tournament came to an end against France in the last 32.
For Isak, representing his country at a World Cup fulfilled a major ambition.
“Playing for your country in a World Cup is a dream of most people,” he said.
The tournament also provided him with an opportunity to build up his fitness, regain his rhythm and return to competitive football after his injury problems.
Isak believes the experience helped prepare him for Liverpool’s pre-season and the start of the new campaign.

Isak Embraces Liverpool’s High-Intensity Style
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has also given Isak a clear tactical responsibility. The striker says his manager wants him to contribute to the defensive phase by pressing from the front.
Iraola believes Liverpool’s defensive work can also become an attacking weapon because winning the ball high up the pitch creates opportunities for quick counter-attacks.
Isak explained that he has been asked to defend in positions that allow Liverpool to immediately move forward when possession is regained.
The striker said the manager has encouraged him to score goals while also demanding that he contribute without the ball.
Liverpool are aiming to play an aggressive, high-tempo style under Iraola, and the team have recorded the most sprints in the Premier League this season.
Isak believes the intensity of the approach can benefit both his own game and the team as a whole.
He also feels Liverpool need to move the ball quickly towards their attacking players rather than relying solely on him to provide the threat.
According to Isak, that approach could create more opportunities and ultimately help Liverpool score more goals.
Isak Wants Trophies Rather Than Personal Targets
The Swedish forward has already scored 60 Premier League goals during his career. His most prolific season in the competition came with Newcastle in 2024-25, when he found the net 23 times.
However, Isak says individual statistics are not his main focus.
His priority is helping Liverpool challenge for trophies and achieve team success.
“Everyone knows that success for this club is winning trophies,” Isak said.
Although he wants to score in every match, Isak explained that he is not someone who likes setting specific personal targets.
For him, the bigger objective is contributing to Liverpool’s pursuit of silverware and helping the club succeed during the season.
