Chelsea Women began their UEFA Women’s Champions League league-phase campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Austria Vienna. However, the result was overshadowed by an injury concern involving influential midfielder Keira Walsh.
Wieke Kaptein scored the only goal of the match with a superb strike from approximately 25 yards. Her effort struck the underside of the crossbar before finding the back of the net, giving Chelsea an early advantage.
The Blues suffered a potential setback when Walsh was substituted in the 20th minute. The 29-year-old England international walked straight down the tunnel after leaving the pitch, raising concerns about her availability for the upcoming Women’s Super League clash against Arsenal.
Chelsea are scheduled to face Arsenal on Sunday, while the next England squad announcement is expected the following week.
Wieke Kaptein’s Stunning Goal Puts Chelsea Ahead
Austria Vienna were competing in the Champions League for the first time, but the Austrian double winners showed enough attacking intent to trouble Chelsea throughout the contest.
The hosts nearly found an equaliser after Chelsea goalkeeper Livia Peng failed to hold a corner. The ball fell into the path of defender Virginia Kirchberger, who attempted to take advantage from close range but sent her shot over the crossbar.
Chelsea had opportunities to extend their advantage before half-time. Melvine Malard, making her first start since joining the club from Manchester United, produced two promising efforts but was unable to add to Kaptein’s goal.
Alyssa Thompson also came close late in the opening period when her shot narrowly missed the target.
Following the interval, Malard was replaced by Maika Hamano in a change that appeared to have been planned before the match.
Austria Vienna continued to create problems after the restart. The Austrian side capitalised on a misplaced pass from Veerle Buurman, allowing Velentina Pötzl to get a shot away. Peng produced an excellent save to prevent the attempt from finding the net.
The visitors came even closer later in the half when Modesta Uka struck the post. Chelsea, meanwhile, saw attempts from Kaptein and Sandy Baltimore saved or blocked as they looked for a second goal.
Sjoeke Nüsken missed Chelsea’s clearest opportunity to double the lead. After excellent wing play from Ellie Carpenter, Nüsken connected with a close-range volley but sent the ball over the crossbar.
Chelsea ultimately held on to secure a 1-0 victory at AFC Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium. Nevertheless, their performance was far from convincing, with Austria Vienna creating several opportunities and keeping the match competitive until the final whistle.

Keira Walsh Injury Raises Concern Ahead of Arsenal Clash
Chelsea Await Further Assessment
Keira Walsh’s early departure will be a major talking point for Chelsea ahead of their important Women’s Super League fixture against Arsenal.
The Blues currently sit third in the league standings, two points behind leaders Manchester City. Walsh has become an important part of Chelsea’s midfield, making her fitness a significant concern before the weekend’s London derby.
Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor explained that the midfielder was taken off as a precaution after experiencing discomfort in her quadriceps.
“Yeah, so more we were trying to be cautious with her, she just felt a little bit of quad. Hopefully it’s not too bad. We’ll assess her tomorrow and see if she’s available for Sunday’s game. It’s too soon to say now.”
Chelsea are also monitoring Lauren James, who is hoping to return to action. Captain Erin Cuthbert, Manaka Matsukubo and Aggie Beever-Jones remain unavailable because of injuries.
The club will now wait for further assessments before determining whether Walsh can feature against Arsenal.
Analysis: Chelsea Still Searching for Their Best Form
Chelsea secured the three points they wanted, but their performance against Austria Vienna exposed several areas that require improvement.
The Blues created opportunities to put the game beyond doubt but struggled to make their chances count. Their lack of efficiency in the final third allowed Austria Vienna to stay within reach of an equaliser for much of the match.
Chelsea also found it difficult to maintain complete control as the game progressed. Despite entering the contest as strong favourites, they conceded several chances and were fortunate that Austria Vienna failed to convert more of their opportunities.
Walsh’s early substitution may have affected Chelsea’s control in midfield. Her ability to dictate possession and link play is important to the team, and her absence appeared to create additional challenges as the match developed.
On paper, Austria Vienna looked like one of Chelsea’s more manageable opponents in the league phase. However, the narrow scoreline highlighted the risk of failing to take chances and control the game effectively.
Bompastor appeared increasingly concerned on the touchline as she attempted to guide her team towards a winning start in Europe’s leading women’s club competition.
Chelsea have never won the Women’s Champions League, although Bompastor believes the squad has the quality to compete for the trophy. She has also acknowledged that the current season could be a transitional period for the club.
Questions remain over Chelsea’s attacking sharpness. The team has already faced criticism for failing to be clinical in two of its opening three Women’s Super League matches, and similar problems were evident against Austria Vienna.
The upcoming meeting with Arsenal will provide a much tougher test. Chelsea will then travel to Bompastor’s former club Lyon, who recorded an emphatic 8-0 Champions League victory on the same night.
Chelsea will need to improve their attacking efficiency, defensive organisation and ability to control matches if they are to challenge the leading teams in Europe.
Sonia Bompastor Emphasises the Importance of Victory
Although Chelsea were unable to produce a dominant performance, Bompastor focused on the importance of beginning the Champions League campaign with a win.
The manager believed her experienced team could have managed the match more effectively and done more to end Austria Vienna’s hopes by scoring a second goal.
“I put out a very experienced team. I think we could have controlled the game better and killed the opposition’s hope by scoring again. Sometimes you have to focus on what is most important, which was winning the game.”
Bompastor also expressed confidence that Chelsea would have enough time to recover before their weekend fixture against Arsenal.
“I think we have enough time to recover for the game at the weekend. I know we will have fresh legs and the game will be very different as it is a London derby.”
The Chelsea manager will now hope her squad can recover properly, while the club’s medical team assesses Walsh’s condition before the important domestic encounter.
Wieke Kaptein Makes the Difference
Wieke Kaptein was Chelsea’s decisive player after scoring the match-winning goal with her impressive long-range effort.
Her strike from outside the penalty area gave Chelsea the lead and ultimately secured the three points, despite the team’s struggles to create a comfortable advantage.
Kaptein’s performance was one of the main positives for Chelsea, although the team will know that greater consistency and improved finishing will be necessary in the matches ahead.
